many people from the south go by their full names. historically, most serial murders happen in the south. also, the media will state as much information as possible and use someone's full name to give you a sense of providing very detailed reporting and research.

Presumably it is an attempt to disambiguate the name from others. For example, both "Mark Chapman" and "John Karr" are very common names. By providing the middle name, the media is doing a courtesy to those who share the first and last name.
