Wilson's Bakery in Santa Clara is great. Not fancy, but good, fresh, resonably priced pastries, breads, and cakes.

There are a ton of nice bakeries in San Jose...I grew up around the corner from Wilson's but they have gone down hill. There stuff isn't that great anymore....but here are a few I do business with:

Aki's Bakery -on Meridian and San Carlos
Greenlee's Bakery-on The Alameda
Peter's Bakery-San Jose
Dick's Bakery-on Meridian passed Willow Glen

You say no supermarket stuff, well PW Supermarket has a great bakery. Its not like Safeway or Albertson's. And Whole Foods has an awesome bakery as well.

Harmony Bakery in Palo Alto.

299 California Ave.

They make great pastries, and it's the coolest bakery around (music oriented)

not a lot. Santana Row and Valley honest are some miles west. Oakridge (south), Eastridge (east), and huge Mall (north) are next furthest away yet frequently do not grant a lot which could't be had at Valley honest or Santana Row.
