I have NEVER heard of CRV transmission problems. CRV's are rated as one of the most reliable used cars to buy!
Some Generation 1 (older than 2002) have had engine issues because those engines need valve adjustments at regular internals and not all owners knew about this or did it.
Some Generation 2 models have had a pull to the right which can and should be fixed by the dealer.
Consumer Reports rates them as 'much better than average' in all components including transmissions. The only Hondas that I have heard with transmission issues were some early model Oddssey and a certain year or two of Accords.
Again, the CRV is one of the most reliable used SUVs out there.
I use mine 'off-road' all the time and its AWD system is great for snow, too. The current CRV has plenty enough ground clearance for mose 'off road' use. Just don't fly over a huge rock or rut.
The previous poster who states that 30% have had transmission problems needs to back that up with hard evidence. Have not heard of anyone having transmission problems.

It's a ladies SUV.
If you want it for city driving only, it would be similar to driving a car with larger wheels.
If you are looking for a low-cost SUV to use off road, or on trails. Avoid it. She suspension components are too low and will drag over rougher terrain than a street.
My personal choice would be a used Mitsubishi Endeavor or a Subaru for economical & occasional light off road, or a subaru. The Mitsubish isn't all that economic with gas, but is a great vehicle.
If you're really set on the CRV, read these reviews first. Most are from people who have driven them.

I own a CR-V and have not had a problem with transmission, blind spot or anything else for that matter. But mine is the previous generation (1997-2001). It now has over 100,000 miles of the most fun, reliable miles I've gotten in any car.

I have a 2001 CRV, it has 115K miles. Engine is completely solid. No problems whatsoever. Just had some minor electrical issues, cruise control works when it wants to, and the ABS braking system went out on me. Only other major downfall is they are VERY noisy on the highway. Hopefully they improved that with the newer models. Other than that, great vehicle, I highly recommend!

We have one. We love it. I have not experienced any blind spots or transmission problems. This is my first Automatic vehicle. I have also owned a 73 Superbeetle, a Geo Metro, 2 dodge dakota, a 99 Civic and a Jeep, all stick shift. This is my favorite by far. I would and have suggested it. For the price we paid for our 04 and the quality I have thus far experienced, I don't want anything more after two years.
