I read Patricia Reilly Giff's books about Polk Street School (these are good for end of 2nd grade begining of 3rd grade), Judy Blume's books (Super Fudge, Blubber, Tales of 4th Grade Nothing, Otherwise Known as Shielah the Great), and Beverly Clearly books (Ramona books, Ellen Tibets, Socks). You could also try the Babysitters Club books by Ann M. Martin (the little sister books are easier than the regular books). You could also try the little house books by Laura Ingalls Wilder (start with Little House in the Big Woods-it is the easiest and the first one). I also enjoyed the pee-wee scout books (though these may be for 2nd grade). Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books by Betty MacDonald are really funny.

I had the entire Anne of Green Gables boxed set when I was around that age. Very good books, and the movies are great as well!
