If anything so much moves or breathes in America even for just a microsecond then American culture dictates that it is of American origin - that's why they believe virtually everything was invented in their country. In the case of Bell he was on American soil (and a US citizen) when he invented the telephone so from an American perspective it is an American invention.

Alexander Graham Bell (March 3, 1847 – August 2, 1922) was a Scottish-Canadian-American scientist and inventor. Today, Bell is still widely considered to be the foremost inventor of the telephone, although this matter has become controversial, with a number of people claiming that Antonio Meucci was the "real" inventor (in June 2002, the United States House of Representatives passed a symbolic bill officially recognizing Meucci for his contributions to the invention of the telephone). Others advance Elisha Gray, the founder of the Western Electric Manufacturing Company. (It is reasonably clear that each of these men independently invented a telephone.) In addition to Bell's work in telecommunications technology, he was responsible for important advances in aviation and hydrofoil technology.

He was a naturalized citizen of the United States

Alexander Graham Bell was a U.S. Citizen at the time he invented the telephone. But he was one o' us crazy Scots.

In Texas history, the names William B. Travis, David Crockett, Sam Houston, James Bowie. All names associated with Texas independence. All of Scottish ancestry.

Seven of the men who walked on the moon have ties to Scotland.

The County Courthouse: Albany, Shackleford County, Texas was built by kilted, Scottish stone masons.

We of Scottish heritage are found in nearly every niche of history.

Italy hailed the redress of a historic injustice yesterday after the US Congress recognised an impoverished Florentine immigrant as the inventor of the telephone rather than Alexander Graham Bell.

(A as in American)

Bell beat Edison(who discovered everything else).

Bell was an illegal immigrant but it was alot easier to sneak into America back in those days.

You don't say.

Let me throw a few other things into the mix just for fun.

What about the recent film of the Enigma machine? Now tell the truth now, you know it don't you?

The 'world' series? Where are all the other countries in that one then?

And you won WW 2 all by yourselves did you? I could go on and on.

Ha ha, you have to laugh, don't you.

Possibly because he was on American soil when he invented it. Typical yanks though! They always try to take the credit for such things due to their apparent lack of achievement in the world.

problem is.. most americans have not read anything much outside the US really. the school curriculum has alot about being patriotic to the USA and about history and american politics. Not much about european, asia , egyptian history and philosophy...they are choice subjects.
