1st is down towards you, 2nd is up and away from you, 3rd is down and away from you, reverse is up and towards you.
Sometimes old ones lock up. If this is the problem, under the hood on the steering column, there are three levers you need to pry into place and line up. By the way nuetral is in the middle. Good Luck.

Although you all are in the ballpark I am hittin' the homerun here. USE the clutch!!!!!
Push in Brake and Clutch(left pedal) Put it in R or 1st depending on the desired direction of travel. ease up on the clutch until you feel the engine pulling the car. Then off the brake ond on the gas releasing the clutch....go about 10-15 MPH and press the clutch and go to second. run it up to 30-35 and go to third...USE THE CLUTCH!! then upon stopping you can either press the clutch , stop return shifter to first or get creative and as you approach the stop press clutch go from 3rd to 2nd release the clutch...that's downshifting (using the engine to assist braking). DON"T GO TO FIRST as the tranny is not a syncromesh and it wil go GRRR GRRR GRRR (bad sound) it called shaving a pound for me!
you have to be stopped completely before going into first....Best to do some driving in an empty parking lot to get the coordination. I drive manual Pick ups and love them....

cool. same year and model i learned to drive on. with the shifter in neutral (center position) pull toward you and down for 1st. for 2nd come back to the neutral position and push toward the dash and up. for 3rd it's straight down from the 2nd gear position. for reverse pull toward you and up. it is an "H" pattern if you are looking at the shifter from the side. reverse would be the top left of the H with the bottom left being 1st gear. top right of the H would be 2nd and bottom right will be 3rd. these shifter are prone on occasion to get "hung up". if this happens look under the car on the drivers side and you will see the linkage. have someone move the shifter back and forth and you should see the point where the linkage is sticking and be able to get them apart.

OK It goes like this:
Neutral - The shift lever is in the center position.
First Gear - From neutral, you pull the shift lever towards you (toward the rear of the car) and move it all the way down in one motion.
Second Gear - From first gear, lift the shift lever all the way up while pushing it toward the front of the car in one motion.
Third Gear - Move the shift lever all the way straight down from second gear, all the way thru neutral.
Reverse - With the shift lever in neutral, pull the shift lever towards you and lift it all the way up in one motion, i.e., straight up from first gear.
From the side, the end of the shift lever follows the shape of a capital "H" as you move it thru all 4 positions.

Well, since you are a young buck, it must be very difficult for you to shift, since you have hooves instead of hands.
