It depends on how much money you’re willing to spend. And if you’re willing to add components yourself. The first desktop I bought was a Compaq. I purchased it for about $400. Overall it works really well, but it’s just a basic computer. It came with a standard monitor and speakers, a CD/DVD writer, but not a DVD ROM drive. The hardware included a decent amount of RAM and an ok processor. So I had to add my own DVD ROM drive ($20) and extra memory (512 MB of Ram for $60.00). The only problem I’ve had was a virus. And this is the major downfall to purchasing a Compaq. They come with warranties, but you have to buy an extension either when you purchase it or within a few weeks. So basically my warranty expired and I had to pay over $100 to get my PC cleaned of viruses.
If you want a computer that you can personalize, I suggest a Dell. I purchased my laptop from Dell and was able to customize it to fit my needs. So since I love playing games, I upgraded the processor and the RAM. Dells do cost more (ex: a basic Dell laptop $799 vs. a basic HP/Compaq laptop $499). But they work really well and Dell customer service is excellent. Dell offers customer accounts online where you can register your PC. And they send you reminders via email of when you should extend your warranty. I’ve had my laptop serviced and the process was so easy. I emailed Dell about my problem. And two days later a technician came to my house and serviced my computer for free.
The only thing about purchasing a Dell is that you have to have decent credit. So if you credit score is low and Dell doesn’t approve you, buy a Compaq.

I would say the new apple computers, or gateway (I have Gateway) it's good until you put all that stuff from the internet like music, etc. I heard Dell computers were blowing up (I read that on yahoo.) Dell are excellent not sure bout what I said eariler though E-machines are bad trust me, and HP are not good as well.
