Cos they are American and don't have any of their own history so steal bits from everyone else!
Born Alexander Bell in Edinburgh, Scotland, on March 3, 1847, he later adopted the middle name 'Graham' out of admiration for Alexander Graham, a family friend. Many called Bell "the father of the Deaf." This title may be regarded as somewhat ironic due to his belief in the practice of eugenics. While both his mother and his wife were deaf, he hoped to one day eliminate hereditary deafness from the population.
His family was associated with the teaching of elocution: his grandfather in London, his uncle in Dublin, and his father, Alexander Melville Bell, in Edinburgh, were all professed elocutionists. The latter has published a variety of works on the subject, several of which are well known, especially his treatise on Visible Speech, which appeared in Edinburgh in 1868. In this he explains his method of instructing deaf mutes, by means of their eyesight, how to articulate words, and also how to read what other persons are saying by the motions of their lips.
Alexander Graham Bell was educated at the Royal High School of Edinburgh, from which he graduated at the age of 13. At the age of 16 he secured a position as a pupil-teacher of elocution and music in Weston House Academy, at Elgin, Moray, Scotland. The next year he spent at the University of Edinburgh. He was graduated from University College London.
See any mention of America in there? Don't think so! Being born nin Scotland, makes you Scottish. Therefore a Scotsman inventedthe telephone. Also being educated in the countries capital would further reinfoce his 'Scottishness!!'
You americans crack me up - you should only open your fat mouths for stuffing big macs in, not trying to act intelligent!

um, just to throw my two pence worth in...it was actually an italian who invented the telephone.
Antonio Meucci - patented his invention in 1871 (two years before bell)but because he couldn't finance it's production and noone would back him he was never credited till relatively recently.
He died residing in Staten Island after leaving Italy in 1835 so i guess americans may still stake a claim for Meucci as well.

"thatmadlass" you should list wikipedia as your source. You seemed to neglect to cut and paste the part about Bell being a naturalize citizen of the USA. Also about the other two inventors of the telephone Meucci and Gray.

They also think that Edison invented the lightbulb.
In 1875 Henry Woodward and Matthew Evans (Canadians) patented a light bulb.
And Joseph Swan in England got his patent the year before Edison.
