We have acknowledged in our society that saying "hi" is something that two people can do 1) to establish freindliness (hi="I'm a friend"), 2) with absoltuely no commitment for a conversation (hi="I acknowledge you, but you don't have to talk to me), and 3) to prolong the initial conversation so you don't have to go too deeply into a subject (hi="let's just chat for now, we can talk later").
