Having policies helps ensure similar situations are handled in a consistent way. It is essential to be consistent when dealing with employees. If you are inconsistent, the employee who is on the receiving end of a bad judgement call may sue the company.

The easiest situation to answer this question would be the act of termination. Lawsuits for unjust termination occur daily. It is very important for a company to have clearly defined policies for what actions constitute terminable offenses in and of themselves, and what repeated actions are grounds for termination, such as time and attendance issues. To continue, a company should have written policy on documentation of the progressive discipline process applied for repeated behaviors. Finally, the company also needs to have set policy on who can initiate the termination of an associate and what steps need to be followed. A company may also have a policy where the associate cannot receive a final paycheck until the return of all items considered company property such as uniforms.

They need to address things like: Company Holidays, Vacation Days per employee, What Health plan to choose, When you terminate someone do you give them severence pay, or what percentatge pay raises if any, etc. etc.

Besides these types of things, they do not need many other policies other than following the Federal and State employment laws.
