I was prescribed cephalexin 500mg because of an infection. I had some problems with the cephalexin. I went to the Emergency room and the nurse said i had a fast heart rate. Could the med be causing my fast heart rate??

I do not see a fast heart rate listed as a reported side effect, but that doesn't mean it isn't possible. If you never experienced a fast heart rate before, then this is something I would see your doctor about to determine why this is going on. There are many things that can cause a fast heart rate including stress, excitement, fever, exercise, etc so it would be best to get checked out. It could have been the stress of the situation you were in going to the ER, but it's best to be checked.

A fast heart rate is not bad of itself, but if it goes very fast for a long time, you could have some troubles.

Before you read the wiki article and get too anxious, many people have a fast heart rate through: anxiety, exertion, emotional stress

An infection by itself can also cause a fast heart rate.

Cephalexin is a fairly safe and well tolerated antibiotic. It will generally not cause a fast heart rate.

If you had some problems and went to the Emergency Room, hopefully they checked you out thoroughly. I would like to believe they would have given you some information about what is going on. Maybe they gave you a written information sheet or a letter for your own doctor.

One of the problems cephalexin can cause is an allergic reaction. This would make you very sick and you should probably know to go to the ER if this was the case.

What was your heartrate? Were you nervous/upset because stress can increae you heartrate. It's possible that it could be your med. but if the Doctor thought there were a problem he would change your prescription.

Next time you see a doctor make sure you ask him/her any questins you have. If you are worried about your meds or your h/r make sure you discuss it with them.

The nurse should not have told you you have a fast hear rate without any explanation. That would worry most people. You shaould have asked her what she meant by that.
