A great writer in the murder/mystery field is Dean R. Koontz. Another one of my favorite writers is Michael Connelly, also in the murder/mystery field. Good luck with whoever you choose.

If you like these two, you may want to consider R.L. Stine and Lemony Snickets.

Others I like include Harper Lee, Maya Angelou, Tom Clancy, Harold Coyle, Michael Creighton, and Clive Cussler (though his novels tend to be rather formulaic, his nonfiction and historical dramatizations are wonderful).
