According to historians, Lincoln, but Franklin D. Roosevelts runs a close second. Popular opinion runs strong in their favor too. Lincoln because he started with so little and acheived greatness. FDR because he inherited a nation in turmiol because of worldwide derpession and brought about prosperity. My choice is John F. Kennedy Had he not been assasinated would have acheived greatness, The USA would be the undisbuted best coutry on the planet. His vision of how the world should be has been acheived in other nation like Japan, the great powers of Europe, Canada and Austalia. The USA would still have high-scale manufacturing, we would be spending our tax dollars on national healthcare, topnotch public education system, astonding mass transit systems, and more. We would be a nation of diverse cultures living in harmony rather than fighting over different life styles. Egual human rights for all persons would have been acheived and we would be fighting over prayer in school and abortion. The disparity betwwen the rich and poor would have been lessened. Reagan and GW Bush are the worst, standing for ignorance, irresponsiblity and irrationality. Giving us the Most Expensive (not the best) defense system in the world, like the Soviet Union which destoyed that country. Bush is not even his own boss, taking orders from the most venomous scondrels in our history ( Cheney, Rumsfeld and Carl Rowe).

That's a really hard question because the majority of the people can't name every president so don't know what they did or didn't do. Another thing would be, every president has had to face different issues. Plus the media won't tell the truth just their opinion to get us to think what they think, and people fall for it. People seem to blame what ever president in office for what problems they have created themselves even if the president had nothing to do with it. We truly don't know what president was the best, but they all did the best they could.
and yes i'll even conceed that to clinton also.

Abraham Lincoln. This is my opinion, and also the opinion of historians (as a group). Lincoln was considered so great because he had a great ability to see what the priorities were in any situation. Thus, for example, he hesitated for several months before his Emancipation Proclamation; he did so in order to entice Kentucky to side with the Union during the Civil War. He was very shrewd. Also, he was very honest (which, historically and bibliographically means that he had a talent for saying things both truthfully and viable politically. Bill clinton had the same kind of talent, but without the honesty.)

It is hard to quantify this question because all the presidents existed in different eras. Could Lincoln have handled the Great Depression? Could JFK have tackled slavery? Could FDR have handled the War of 1812? Could Washington have handled the ever present mass media society we have today?
Then there are the presidents like Garfield that we never got to really know.
I think that there is no one great one. There are many that were great in their time... or at least better than their contemporaries.

FDR because of his many accomplishments even though the congress was usually republican during his 4 terms he must"ve done something right. Like win ww2 or beat the great depression build a large chunk of our infrastructure that made us an industrial power house. His only real blemish was his internment of Japanese Americans. I would have picked LBJ for his ending segregation and his war on poverty, the moon landing . His down fall was Vietnam damn fool war.

Naturally FDR was a standout in time of need and close behind was dear old Ronnie Reagan. Both of them reinstated the image of the US and took the throne in world politics. Kind of balances things out because one was from each party. The one distraction from FDR is that the media of today would have had him impeached over the back room deals he made.
