I was advised to avoid the GW and stay clear of NYC. I took the Tappan-zee twice when I needed to do what you are and was very happy with the choice. Also, I drove down on the Palisades Parkway which was pretty fast going.

By far, the Tappan-Zee to Connecticut, I drive it from the Cherry Hill area all the time, much better choice
