why do people assume those who spell badly are of a lower level of intelligence? My spelling is ok but I see lots of people criticise others for mistakes.

In my opinion, clicking on 'Check Spelling' doesn't make you clever!

Bad spelling = low intelligene?

No danger!

Relying on spell checks to cover up your mistakes is poor!

I guess it boils down to laziness. If you don't take the time to make your point better understood should I really take my time to answer you. Spell check is an option and it doesn't pick up other faults e.g. grammar, syntax
If I find spelling mistakes on a company's website I assume that they are unprofessional or at least if the are sloppy with how they present themselves they might be equally sloppy in dealing with their clients. Check spelling is an aid to those whose spelling isn't so good the same as some people who aren't so good at Maths use calculators for relatively simple arithmetic. It is better they use these aids than ignore them and have their mistakes pointed out later. We all make mistakes (as the Dalek said as it dismounted the dustbin) but some are more avoidable than others. Lastly education does not stop when you leave school it begins and you try to improve yourself all the time. Any intelligent person will tell you how ignorant they are that is the point. You realise how little you know and try to help others who are ignorant of things which you may know. Eg this site

I've got to admit when I started using this, I didn't realise there was a spell checker because I didn't look for one. I am quite a reasonable speller but do sometimes make a mistake as I'm sure everyone does. We should not put anyone down for thier mistakes. Spell checked or otherwise. If all a person can do is put others down for there mistakes then they are of the lower base intelligence. (not spell checked). Also there are words wich will spell check incorrectly such as there and their and many others.

I totally agree with you, I really don't know why people have to criticise others for the way they spell, either we have a shed load of wanna be English teachers on here or big bullies, isn't it a form of bullying to pull other people to bits constantly, when Yahoo Answers set us all an English exam then I suppose we can worry, but until they do I suggest we continue to do what is intended on here, that's to ask questions and get answers, its an help aid for some and a bit of fun for others.

People who spell badly are probably not at a lower intelligence level , but people of a certain intelligence level can at least try the spell checker.
And if you can't understand a question, how can you answer it?

Maybe clicking on 'check spelling' won't make you clever, but it will indicate a desire on your part to better present yourself to the public in the only way possible here--and that is by the printed word.

Displaying our attitudes to the public on the message board is by the written word and how well it is expressed. It is clear not all feel about this as I do.

That relies upon on the blunders and the place it has recognized and a number of different factors. case in point if the blunders modifications the meaning of the sentence to the quantity that it negates what one intends to assert, then it somewhat is a public provider. incredibly if the blunders looks in a information provider, on a public website that has as its purpose to assist people discover solutions, the place to discover some thing, the thank you to pay taxes or save money legally to get a tax refund. there are a number of cases whilst it turns right into a public provider. If the blunders is obviously an trouble-free typo and makes no real difference to the point or reason, it probably turns into in basic terms self aggrandizing to make a correction. if so needless to say it somewhat is barely self serving.

Making spelling mistakes shows poor intelligence. It is a simple matter of good etiquette. Poor sentence structure and grammar is also a sign of poor intelligence.

So if you want to look like you are serious about asking a question, or answering a question, take a few more moments to improve your spelling and grammar. If you want people to take your answer or questions seriously, you will put your best foot forward.

it's criticize...but anyway.

because most people who misspell do it like they're talking "all ghetto." like "dat" instead of "that," "dis" instead of "this." "da" instead of "the." "wut" instead of "what."

I don't usually say anything unless every other word is misspelled. then I know that person REALLY has a problem with their grammar and they should probably go back to grade-school.

Also, when people choose to write like their completely illiterate, I either don't answer the question or I tell them to learn how to spell and grow up.

People who choose to speak or write in this matter are usually little kids who think they are a bunch of "bad@sses." I can't stand kids like that. They need to mind their manners (most of the time), and learn some proper English...(or whatever language they are butchering).

You're right, "Check Spelling" doesn't make you any more clever than anyone else. but at least the person who DOES do it is making a conscious effort to correct their mistakes. good day my lady...

I think you have to accept on here that people's spelling abilty varies massively. For some, it's genuine inability, other like to use text style abbreviations, and some are just lazy. Either way, there's no point in criticising, other than perhaps when the question is so poorly written that it can't be undertsood.

I am dyslexic and so spelling is a problem for me. A greater problem is my srappy keyboard which makes more errors than I ever could alone.
I generally assume people who use text speak on this not to be worth reading. I have to read text speak phonetically aloud to understand it (probably a dyslexia thing).
I have not used the spell check on this to give you all an example of my normal level of spelling.
