What are dust mites?
Quietly lurking within those dust bunnies under our beds, inside sofas and carpet are creatures too small to see without a microscope or strong magnifying glass. Dust mites are arachnids, the class of arthropods which includes spiders, scorpions and ticks. Dust mites feed on dead skin that sloughs from our bodies (and probably potato chips & cookie crumbs). They live their whole lives in dark corner dust bunnies: hatching, growing, eating, defecating, mating, laying eggs.
It's their bathroom habits that make us itch and wheeze. Many people develop severe allergies to dust mite droppings. Lie on a rug where they live and you might get itchy red bumps on your skin. Breath in dust and you may have more serious symptoms like difficulty breathing or even a severe asthma attack.
How can they affect my health?
These insects may be small but they pack a unhealthy punch. They contribute to poor indoor air quality (IAC). The body parts and excrement for these non parasitic creatures can trigger sneezing, allergic reactions, cause rashes, watery eyes, coughing, dizziness, lethargy, breathing difficulties, depression, and general bad health. It is also believed that young children exposed to these mites may develop life long allergies. It is estimated that exposure to dust mite waist, animal dander and mold cause about 200,000 emergency-room visits by asthma patients a year and who knows how many more people suffer needlessly on a daily bases. The bottom line, dust-mites are unwanted pests! The good news is you can very effectively fight these unwanted pests with a vapor steam cleaner and some simple techniques that we will discuss in the how to section of this page.
Often carpet cleaning companies brag that they can kill or remove dustmites using their high moisture hot water vacuum system to extract them. While it is true they can get a few, the water is rarely hot enough to kill them (temps should be above 212 degrees to do a good job) and in fact, what you end up with is a wet carpet all the way down the padding and that is what dust mites crave, high levels of moisture. Once they are done, you may end up with a dust mite outbreak even worse then before they came.
Some cleaning services may offer to put chemicals on your bed or carpet. We strongly recommend against this approach. No matter how they sell it, keep in mind that insecticides are just not good for us. They may also say that their product is natural but remember, there are many all natural compounds in nature that are still bad for us. All natural super heated, low moisture vapor steam is the only safe and easy to accomplish the task of killing dust mites.
Whiter Sinks
When going about your kitchen cleaning, you want your white kitchen sink to shine when you're through. To get it to sparkle, place paper towels across the bottom of the sink and saturate it with bleach. Let it stand for 1/2 hour then rinse.
4 Reasons to Use Hot Water When Washing and Rinsing Dishes
1. Cleaning Power- Washing dishes in hot water actually helps to lift away and clean dirty dishes reducing the amount of time you'll have to spend scrubbing and reducing the need for extra dish cleaning products.
2. Killing Bacteria and Microorganisms.-Hot water is needed to effectively kill bacteria on dishes. It may seem like you can squeeze a little more use out of a dishpan full of cool water, but compromising your families exposure to bacteria is not worth the extra trouble of running a new pan of hot water.
3. Cutting grease.- Water temperatures under about 90 degrees will leave a nasty greasy film on your dishes as they dry. Grease cutting ability is severely hampered by cool water leaving your dishes less than clean.
4. Drying Time- Hot water dries much more quickly on dishes than warm or cool water. Dishes can essentially dry themselves if the water temperature is right. As an added benefit, dishes will dry spot and streak free with hotter water. Many people try to conserve hot water during the rinsing part of dishwashing and just hand dry dishes. Keep in mind that pools of water and wet dishtowels are a haven for bacteria. You may have just spent a lot of effort to get dishes clean only to allow them to become contaminated.

You definately need to get rid of that sponge. Those things hold
germs like a magnet. Wash cloths are much better. You can use
bleach to get rid of many germs. We use it to disinfect dialysis
machines & kill germs on the surface of things. You don't have a dishwasher, but you can add some bleach to your dishwater or rinsewater. Use rubber gloves to protect your hands. Towels etc should be changed every few days. Sweep your couch. If you don't have a dustbuster or a hand vac, put your sofa cushions on the floor & sweep them. Beat the dust to the surface and sweep again till there is no dust.
As to dust mites ask at the drug store or maybe wal mart.
Best of luck

Bleach is good. Change the sponge every week or so, just smell it. As for the couch, get a bug spray with permethrin in it. It is completely harmless to people and will biodegrade after 48 hrs.
