Here's what DrKoop.com has to say:
"Dilatation and curettage, also called a D&C, is a surgical procedure in which the cervix of the uterus is dilated (expanded) and the endometrial lining of the uterus is scraped with a curette (a loop-, ring-, or scoop-shaped instrument with a long, rodlike handle.)"

Lots more at the link.

D and C stands for Dilatation and Curettage. The doctor dilates your cervix and uses a spoonlike medical tool called a curette to scrape the lining of your uterus. It is done by going inside your pusssy. It gets all of the bad stuff out of you. If you were a virgin before the procedure, you will not be a virgin after the doctor finishes the job.

it is a safety measure done by a surgeon when a woman has a miscarriage and the physican wants to make sure everything was expelled and no remains of the unborn fetus is there. It is also done on a female who is bleeding excessively the physican may want to make sure there are no large blood clots that are not being expelled normally through a normal period or if you are in menapause and experiencing heavy bleeding it will be done to skape the lining to slow or stop the heavy bleeding
