Red Sox players only wear red jerseys on Sunday; not sure the tradition behind it, but it's a Sunday Fenway tradition and has been for quite some time. I think they're nicer than the regular unis but maybe it's just because I don't see them as often.

It's their alternate jersey, some teams have them. The Red Sox wear them for home day games.

I believe Walter E is correct by pointing out this is strictly for marketing to give fans something else they have to shell out
big bucks to buy. A similar ploy is the use of different colored jerseys for batting practice. And Maccie to the contrary, not every team has them - I'll go to bat for the Yankees here (no pun intended) even though I am not a Yankee fan and point out that they have stuck with the Home pinstripes and the road greys although I think they have a plain navy jersey they wear for bp. Stay tuned to see what 2009 brings when the (insert multi bullion dollar corporation name here) - new Yankee
Stadium opens.
