What is a good radar detector and about how much is reasonable price?

I always liked Whistler.
You can get a decent one for around $50.
I paid $100 for mine and it is simply awesome.

Valentine One is somewhat better but much more expensive.

the best there is, is the ESCORT brand name. made by Cincinnati Microwave. the price 289.00$ worth every penny. i have been drive-ing a big truck[18 wheels, 72ft. long, 100,000lb's weight all over the u.s. & canada. when i bought bought my 1st. one in 1985. i had gotten a speeding ticket. do 80 in a 55 speed zone. in ohio. after i bought mine i never got another ticket. u will have to learn how to read the signal. it will tell u if one is behind come-ing up or one front come-ing at u. all so if one is the vecinity as u. we are talking about the cops of course.
