you have to clear the HD so it will run with your motherboard. Becaus eof the different chipsets, layouts, versions, etc. of mothboards, Windows, when it installs, matches to fit those different characteristics. since your computer is most likely different than your wife's, it wont work correctly. you need to put in your windows cd, and set bios primary boot device to CD, adn reinstall windows. it will detect your hardware devices and install correctly.
Hope this helps!

if it has windows xp, and you are trying to use is as the boot drive, it is not going to work. the windows activation file won't match the hardware changes. You will have to reinstall windows.
The license is only good for one computer, the one it was installed on
If you are installing it as a second drive, make sure the jumpers are correct on the drives, yours as master and hers as slave, or both as cs (cable select).

Timothy pretty much hit it, you might want to check the jumpers on the back of the hard drive. Then insure that your cable is connected to that drive. Master to the primary(or the end of the cable) and slave to secondary( or the middle connector). After that you might need to check the Bios if the jumpers and cables didn't work.

If you reinstall windows just be careful! You can lose all information if you do it wrong. If this is windows xp then just do a repair installation and not a full reload of the OS.
Here is how to do it correctly.

We are all assuming that he's making it the second hard drive. If you're trying to boot to it, it ain't gonna happen - unless the two machines are i-freakin'-dentical in every regard.
