if i am not watching TV, eating, listening to music, being on my PC, meditating, sleeping, talking on the phone, and anything else that would engage my attention, give me gratification, what am i left with?

What is it to be human when all the external is taken away and when the engagement into everything is removed? When I dont define myself by what is around me and what i am doing?

All this from getting rid of my TV, TV occupied me at times like this!

There will always be some engagement. Gardening takes me away from the engagements of society. To be human in this day and age is to be part of a society. Society gets me down. Then i go gardening. It teaches me about myself because it doesn't interfere with my autonomy. It is not an external because it is part of what was before there were societies. Engagement of some sort is a necessity of being human.

I agree TV is a venoms distraction. It does to creativity what George W. Bush does to grammar!

In the absence of engagement, man is left only with boredom, but boredom leads to creativity.
And creativity is what defines us! We are Human because when we have nothing to challenge us; we challenge our selves!
That is what separates us from the animals and makes us human. When a dog is bored it does not become creative, it sleeps!

Art, music, literature are all expressions of humanity…… We immortalise ourselves only through what we do! without what we do…. We are nothing, not human, only carcass

Your surroundings and what you are influenced by make you who you are. Objects, people, possesions, work, music, everything. You will not know until you do and experiment and take certain things away and try other things, i.e. Try a new hobby, or do something frightening or what you have not done before....this will change the wayyou think....a life of routine is no life!

What is it like to be a deaf, dumb, blind kid who sure plays a good pinball? What is it like to experience the world only through touch, smell, and taste?

I have known deaf people, and blind people. Dumb people are born every day. (at least temporarily dumb)

The other senses you have are exaggerated in these circumstances. Sometimes, the senses you did not know you had are very exaggerated in such a person.

What is it to be human?

What is it to feel empathy, and compassion for the deaf dumb blind kid who sure plays a good pinball? That kid knows nothing about hearing, seeing, and speaking and yet you feel sorry for him. How do you know he does not feel sorry for you, that you do not have the developed senses that he has. That you are blind to the capability of the human mind, and its powers beyond what you can see, hear, and say.

What is it to be able to see beyond your own survival, and into the lives of others?

To have a brain, and to use it, that is what it is to be human. You are human because of the size of your brain, and because of its ability to think beyond the here and now.

You are left with yourself, and you are the sum of all things that have ever happened to you and all things that your imagination can conceive. If that is not enough for you, you may as well give up now and have done with it.

to be human is to feel emotions to have a soul, to have a conscience.
tv,music, computer, etc.. those are merely objects occupying and influencing who you are as a person, classifying you into groups.

wow you've successfully made me think!

i have no idea but have you ever thought that if you did stop doing stuff that engages your attention you'd cease to exist because we need the external things or we'd just spontaneously combust?!
