Mood rings and other items like them change color according to temperature. The idea is that the warmer or cooler you are will be indicated by a change in the color of the ring, which is supposed to tell what mood you're in, by the temperature of your skin.

my mom had a mood ring. when it was blue she was happy. when she was mad it made a red mark on my dad's head.

like, i learned like 2 years ago in one of my american girl quiz books when it said:
yellow-happy
orange-spunky
red-fiesty
blue-calm
purple-wide awake

and
black and brown..
