Hello
I am planning a vacation to Japan and am wondering if anyone out there has any advice on renting a cell phone in Japan. Any info or advice would be helpful!
Thanks!

1. Use a 3G phone and call your company about using your actual cell phone there. Best choise.
2. Rent it at Narita airport. It will take a time.
3. Buy a prepaid phone downtown... minutes are expensive there.

Vodafone Japan (Softbank) an NTT DoCoMo rent phones for tourists and usiness travellers. These can be rented at the airport.

If the polcies are followed, one must present a Japanese ID card in order to buy a pre paid phone.

When I was there (2004), non-residents could only get the prepaid kind. They cost about $100 and you buy minutes on cards at stores and add them that way. On the positive side, you can buy minutes at places like 7-11 which are on every street corner in Tokyo. You might have some problems if you're not in the city though.

I know that you can rent them from the convinient store. That is where I got mine while I was there for a short visit. And my parents live there so when I stay for a few weeks, I just rent one. Vodaphone is one of the popular brands. You may want to check out their site.

if you have a 3G phone, you can use it in Japan.

If you need to rent, I think Narita Airport has a rental shop (by NTT?), you can check narita airport's website for more info.

It might be cheaper just to buy a pre-paid phone at a convenience store.
