Down here in Florida a TS inmate sentenced to prison is housed in Special Management Facilities , which are prisons that house inmates that are 65+, in wheelchairs, trans-gender, etc. In Orange County Jail they put them in what they call ISO dorms, it's in the bowels of the jail. Almost like solitary confinement. They say it's done this way because to many problem situations arise if you put a TS person in with the male inmates. I'm sure !

Pretty sure they're put in with whatever their legal sex is. The legal definition of "sex" changes from state to state. Pretty much no matter where they're put, they face assault and rape on a regular basis. UNLESS they get placed into protective custody(ie solitary), and thereby give up the right to many rehabilitation programs that are only offered to the general prison population. Not to mention the state sometimes discontinuing their medical treatments.

Many times it depends on what the person is legally, which may depend if they're pre-op or post-op. So generally if their ID says male they go to the men's prison, usually post-op female to males and pre-op transwomen. If their ID says female they go to the women's prison, usually post-op transwomen and pre-op transmen. Both can face sexual harassment anywhere from touching and comments to rape and murder in the men's facilities. I'm sure some forms of harassment occur in the women's prisons too. Occassionally they're put in solitary to protect them, but some sadistic, close-minded cops throw them in the general population and let the rapists and murders have their way with them.

I asked my police officer friend who works in LA county jails and he said it is done on a case by case basis...if the person is feminine he will go with the women or they will be put with minimum offenders but not with maximum security prisoners...there is a security risk and they don't want lawsuits!!!

Transgendered people who have not completed the re-assignment surgery are usually housed according to there sex at birth — a situation which puts male-to-female transsexual women at great risk of sexual violence.
If re-assignment surgery has been completed, they are usually housed according to their re-assigned sex.

if they are male they are put with the males. (you know, if they have a penis) if they are female (no penis) they are put with the females.
Why do you even want to know this?
