Earth is not flat, but round. In the 13-1400's people thought the Earth was flat and that if you went too far into the ocean, you would fall off the Earth and into oblivion, and obviously die. Christopher Colombus discovered it was round when he landed in the US in 1492.

People once thought the earth was flat, but some sages knew better. Erastosthenes knew it is a sphere and measured its girth as 25,000 miles. That is close to current figures.

Erm...mate, the Earth isn't flat; they've proved that centuries ago. I could've sworn that it was round for some reason. And if you mean topographically, the Earth is covered with oceans and mountains and canyons and crevices and a lot of other stuff.
