I would change the whole idea of government.

The present method of governing America is out of date

My idea is that we need a complete revamp in government. Not just change the people, but completely change the way we think about government.
When the current system of democracy was created the population of America was about a sixth of what it is now.

So each person's representation has reduced by around 600%.
In other words, you now get about one sixth of the representation that a citizen used to get.
This is obviously ludicrous. and is absolute evidence of a need for a change.

As the population has increased so dramatically, then the effectiveness and fairness of a central government has reduced.
What we now need is an increase in the power of local government, and a reduction in the power of central government.
I propose that we should bring back something akin to the parish councils. We should have constituencies of a maximum of 500 families. These constituencies should have total control over the lives of its constituents, with no interference from outside, They must provide all of their own facilities such as school, health care, pensions, police, ar anything which they feel that they need.
If they feel that they are too small for a particular project or service, then they negotiate with nearby constituencies to make suitable arrangements. There would be no higher level arbitrator. Full responsibility would rest at the local level.

The benefits of this are enormous. Firstly, everybody would know everybody else within a constituency, so when a problem arises it would be easy to get to the source, because it would be to everyone's benefit to do so. This alone would reduce terrorism and serious crime to a minimum. A sort of neighbourhood watch scheme in which everybody takes full part, and makes the decisions. The money presently spent on taxes, most of which disappears in red tape, civil servants' and congress men's and senator's salaries, waging war, and hundreds of other expenses from which the average citizen receives no benefit whatsoever, would be spent on directly benefiting the community, on projects voted for by the community.
It is most likely that taxes could be reduced to a fraction of what is presently paid, because all wastage would be readily identified. Everybody would participate in their own government, because they would be able to understand it, and would have a real voice.
There would be no need for secret services, or secrets of any kind, saving another fortune, and removing another load of confusion.

I'm sure you can identify many other benefits, and I'm also sure that any disadvantages could quickly be overcome.

I would first of all have 2 vice presidents, one in charge of national agenda's the other in charge of international agenda. I would completely change the Presidency to allow a President to run for a third term but only after another President had been in power. I would allow a non born American to run as President. I would insure that all Americans are registered to vote if they were old enough and I would do away with the Electoral College. Voting in America is a costly initiative and therefore needs restrictions on the amount of spending to run for office. Limits would be placed on spending and to offset the limitations on choice I would make it easier to have 3rd and 4 th choice candidates running in every state. America is built upon religious freedom and I would return the rights to have the majority choose whether or not God was allowed into the classrooms and the courthouses of the United States of America. I would make it mandatory that all citizens have identification systems to allow for easy access to such individuals while travelling and living in this country. Terrorism has raised its ugly head to a point where no such thing as personal secrecy should be allowed. Many things would change but democracy would be studied and reported on to the President so that yearly changes could be made to make it stronger across this land.

the president would be someone else someone not selfish and knows how the other side livves someone who would care about more things than just money and power. then i would repaint the white house yeah the name would have to change but then what is life without some change. i would probably change the color like to red white and blue then everyone will know that thats the governments house the house of laws.the public access is very restricted i think i would ease up on it were not all criminals that want to blow up and kill places and people. about that staff i think they have too many old guys i mean isnt it about the future we cant have a future with people who probably wont be alive in the future though they are good to have to make sure we dont make mistakes that happened in the past but then thats why theres history in school for young people to learn and do something with that information.rules keep things in order though not all people follow the rules our world would be in much more trouble then it is know without them i believe the rules are just fine even though some may not seem very resonable

Now you've asked the ultimate question!

When I was in grade school, we visited the White House.

It was open to everyone, and you could literally walk in at your own leisure.

Now it's so guarded and closed off, that the average citizen lost contact with his president, and no wonder why all the people here on YA keep bringing up it's current occupants.

You'll never see a young Billy Clinton shaking hands with JFK...again! That was then.

Today, nobody gets to see who they've elected to represent them, so why bother voting at all.

Imagine one day an America where nobody votes.

They've lost touch, maybe due to all the changes and tension going on, but maybe they prefer it this way.

They get elected, and off they go, and nobody is the wiser for it, except that they earn a lot more than most people do...for doing who knows what!

If I could change it, I'd go back to the days when everything was open for all to see. Spring open all the doors. Break open all the windows. Let the fresh air and sunshine in!

And screw that silly thing called al Quaeda!

It's all a big hoax played on us!

I would only fight a war by using the maximum force so to make it end that much sooner. Thereby saving lives on both sides. A deterrent is no deterrent if you are afraid to use it. Nuke Mecca!

Put the Ten Commandments on the front porch.
The only people to be their better have a thorough understanding of Constitutional law. Repeal the patriot act. Dissolve homeland security. Correct lawlessness by causing the media to be honest and correct the economic scams we live with today.~Randy

I would dig underneath it and get some of those coals for my fire place left over from the first Whitehouse before it burned down.

Fire Rove, Cheney, and the entire Whitehouse staff. Start impeachment proceedings against Bush and Cheney.

Move the White House to a city that isn't a Ghetto.

Stop all civil service protections. Work and you get to keep your job. Don't work and get fired - that is how is works in the private sector.
