Any animal you get needs handled often, from when it is young. Get one that is tame or get a baby/toddler. Make sure you handle it all the time. Otherwise you will just have unruly vermin in your house and people wont come over because of this.
When I was a kid, my friend had a rat. They got it as a baby and were decided not to feed it to his snake. When it was older, it would just sit on his head and chill. No, it didn't poop on him. I also see a girl riding the bus with a rat in her hooded sweatshirt. They are cool if they know you well.
Ferrets are cool creatures but are not smart and terrorizers. This is not based on any sources. Ask someone else about ferrets. I've always wanted one but only heard bad things.

Well i have had three ferrets and i loved them all, but they smell really bad(even though they are descended they still smell). The one thing that made me REALLY love my ferrets is when they tore the box spring of my bed apart and took all the padding in it and made a nest out of it. That was a great mess to find. But over all they are fun to play with, and they are VERY VERY smart.
I cant really tell you too much about rats. My cousin had two of them male (Floyd) and female (Pink). He thought they were just the coolest things ever. The only thing i noticed about them is they are masters of escape. They chewed the metal wire on the top of the cage. So if you are thinking about getting a rat i would make sure it is a big cage with plenty of things for them to do. or it is very chew proof.

I love rats. A problem that has arisen in recent years, with pet rats, is the proliferation of "feeder rats." People breed rats as food for snakes, and so they don't consider the temperament or health of their breeding stock. Get your rat from somebody who breeds exclusively for pets.
I love ferrets too. They are a lot of fun, but more trouble than rats. Some places they are illegal.

Rats are some of the best companions. They're funny, sweet, and usually very good beggars. They'll steal your food if you let them & chatter while doing it as if they think it's funny too. If you've got time to share with these rodents, I think you'll really enjoy having at least 2 as pets.
I've never personally had a ferret but my friend did & everyone loved him too but he seemed to be a little lazy when he wasn't off scampering on some hyper high.

I have always had a pet rat. they are amazing. Rats are so smart. one of my rats used to cuddle with me in bed and would leave the bed to pee. Ferrets on the other hand. i did not like. i had two and they r so anoying. too much scuttleing, need too much attention. if you have kids or are really busy do not get a ferret. they are stinky too.
Rats are great though. they're so friendly and they can be tickeld too.
but they all have diferent personalities so be careful which one you choose. it could be cool or annoying.
good luck

I had a white albino rat that i loved to death. his name was bubba and his favorite food was cucumbers. It was his special treat.
The biggest peice of advice i have for you is to not get a wire cage for your rat or ferret. Many people dont think about this, but as they get older it gets tougher for them to move around, just like it happens to people. The wire frame of the cage becomes more of an obstacle/death trap than a home for your pet.
We had to put my rat down (we actually took him to the vet to be put down) because once he got really old he injured himself in the cage, trying to climb to the second level. His leg swelled up really big and i felt really bad for him, but there was nothing we could really do, he was so old that it was basically just his time.
My advice is please do not get a wire cage, and take this answer seriously! Get a huge fish tank in stead. Your pet will thank you for it later.
Oh, also, my sister has a pet ferret. It really stinks, to tell you the honest truth. They have some sort of stinky gland and you have to clean out the cage ALL THE TIME or else your house will smell like poop. My parents were against me getting a rat but in time they favored my rat above the ferret just because it didnt smell like ****. I dont want to make it seem like i hate ferrets, because they are actually quite intelligent animals and very loveable. The only thing is they really smell bad!

Rats are social and affectionate animals. I have had many different kinds and have a young man right now that lives with my guinea pig. Do not feed them too much people food as they get aggressive about eating. I use cat litter in a large glass tank with a mesh lid. (make sure all the dust clears before placing your critter in the tank.) Put hides in the tank and large sticks for chewing and climbing. Rats are wonderful pets!

i Love Rats. i would never get a hamster or a mouse. I have trained rats to do tricks, our last Zebra was soooo sweet, she loved to cuddle up with the dog. And was happy to just be out of her cage and play with my son. Rats don't bite (they do use their teeth to feel) I would recommend getting a pet rat to anyone looking for a small pet. I have heard great things about ferrets but i have never owned one. hope this helps

I have 15 rats. 1 grown male, 1 grown female and 13 two week old babies.
The produce very quickly! Like about 28-30 days.
They are gentle as long as they are handled from babies. I feed mine Hamster/Gerbil feed and snacks like cereal, cheetos, fruit and veggies.
They seem to be cleaner than hamsters, which I found to be stinky little critters.
They can be trained to do tricks, you can walk them like a dog, by putting them in a halter. And, if they are handled often and well fed & watered, they are great pets. If they get out of their cage, they are easy to put back in, providing they are handled often, and kept fed & watered.
