Do you think caning is a good punishment as opposed to prison or such? I think it is because it gives people something to fear and makes them think twice about committing a crime.

I think for certain crimes it would be good, if only to lessen the number of people in prison for minor crimes, and save on the tax payers money. It would have a deterring action. I was caned in school abroad, and you try to avoid doing what fetched you the caning in the first place.

The laws in the US probably would never allow for it, but I think it would be a good idea and in many cases would strike some fear into people. But it would have to be for somewhat minor crimes, not felonies.

In the 1990s an American teenager, Michael somebody or the other, was caned with a bamboo cane on his bare buttocks in a Singaporean prison for spray painting a car and vandalizing it. He served some prison time too. I believe he actually got 5 strokes, even though he was awarded more by the courts, but Clinton's administration had written and asked for it to be reduced or eliminated.

I doubt he would ever vandalize a car again.

In Aceh Banda, Indonesia recently A woman who cheated onher husband ( 4 people witnessed it , as per the law) and she and the man she cheated with were caned!!
I absolutely agree with it. she acted like a slut and was treated like one. he got the worse of it too. i was happy to see him get caned as well , knowingly sleeping with a married woman.
I was in Jakarta at the time and seen it broadcast on the news!!

Both punishments are meant to demean and humiliate the offender. Neither really work.

That would be cruel and unusual!!
But seriously, even the death penalty has not been shown to be much of a deterrent these days.
