Patiently. Sort them into countries & keep each country, etc., each in different envelopes (normal ones is OK when sorting) , Do this first then you will get an idea of what you have. Type up reference list too. I think there is a Stamp Collectors' Magazine Your main library may have a copy. If so, they will also have back copies for you to read. Once you have your stamps sorted, go and look at the back copies. This will give you an idea of what may be valuable and what may not be. Take a notebook & pen when checking the back copies & make notes. You CANNOT borrow these magazines, so make time to spend there.

Also - try the library - probably reference. There is a Catalogue detailing stamps and their values. It is published annually. I think it may be Gibbons Stamp Catalogue. Once you have the book, if you can't find your stamp, ring up the company that write it each year to ask where how you can trace your Disney stamp - or write to them, enclosing an SAE and colour photocopy of your stamp.

When I once collected stamps, - example, The Penny Black would be included with your purchased packets of stamp - but it was only a copy, just a promotional ploy. Even so, it was nice to have in my stamp albumn.

Just thought, you will also have to learn differnet language "words". Italia is easy, but Hungary, for example, has something like "Magyar" on..... Wash your hands first, as any grease on a possible valuable stamp may ruin the stamp & it's possible value. ie, as another "Answer" noted that Philatelists use stamp tweezers which have blunt ends.

Get a friend to help and both have fun.... Turn detective and I hope you "hit gold".

Wow! You've got a whole new hobby. I thought stamp collecting was boring until I talked to someone at the library who was looking up stamps. From what I understand, you need to first sort them by condition, putting the best into little envelopes you can get. He always handles them with tweezers. Then he looks them up in books at the library. Our library is small and only has a few books, but they help. I don't know if it's listed on the Internet or not. Anyway, ... it was pretty interesting - different countries, art, themes, etc. You could have some valuable stuff there. Have fun!

For a Disney stamp to sell for that much, it must have been an error stamp - something like a color printed wrong. For general information of finding the value of a stamp collection (even if you didn't inherit it), go to http://www.virtualstampclub.com/inherit.html

I hope you enjoy the stamps for their beauty and historical value, not just for what they might sell for - stamp collecting is a wonderful hobby!

Go to the public library. They will have Scott's stamp catalog in the reference section. You can look up the value in there.

Look in the yellow pages or online for a stamp collector or auction house in your area and contact them.

In the mean time, look up the right methods for storing them.
