I am an astronomer, but if it's going to space that your'e interested in then you'll be better off majoring in aerospace or engineering. Pure astronomy is just pure science, and doesn't have anything to do with astronauts. Geophysics, Biophysics, Engineering, Pilots -- all are very good for a future astronaut as a background.

I worked for 4-5 years as a professional astronomer, and it was always my dream from the age of 7.
I have run into two teens who want to think about being astronomers on Answers. You might want to talk to them for mutual support:
Morgan, http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Avo2Xj.aq.1GC7WjoIYAO27sy6IX?qid=20060803113832AAqc2h8 and one of the answerers to her question "Astronomical Gal" or something like that (but until someone else breaks the tie on that question, you can't link to her answers page.) I do not know how to reach either one except through answers. No doubt there are more.
Also, you should check out Sten Odenwald's "Astronomy Cafe". He has an astronomy career guide page, http://www.astronomycafe.net/guide/guide.html which he links to from his "Ask an Astronomer" page. He is a good writer and gives excellent explanations. I wish his career guide page existed 10 years ago...might have saved me from some missteps!

To the Holy Rev Soleil - oh, so searching on the celebrities makes you an astronomer? i have seen a human kidney, i guess that makes me a healthcare professional. Yesh, you're good - yet i think that we get requested because, being those who're fascinated in technological awareness and hardship examining books on the problem, we would want to easily recognize. i'm not an astronomer, yet i recognize the solar will burn out in 5bn years, supply or take.

Of course there are anstronomers here. I am an astronomy teacher and have always wanted to go up into space. In college, take lots of physics classes and then in grad. school, concentrate in astro. Perhaps you'll be one of the lucky few to make it.
