We have a garbage disposal that freezes up. It runs fine once it goes, but when it's turned on, it needs a tap on the body to get it spinning......and now it's at the point where I need to use a stick to get it started fairly often. I know I could replace it, thanks, but since it works fine once it gets rolling, I'm wondering if there's any treatment I could use to get the initial startup to be easier? Baking soda? Oil? Any help would be appreciated!

It sounds like the bearings are starting to stick ( maybe a little water in them). When you break them lose, it works fine until it sits for awhile. If it doesn't have to sit to not start, then it could be the motor switch. Some of the higher end disposers change directions every time they start.

I think you need a new one.

Baking soda (a box) followed by vinegar. Let that sit/bubble for about 15/20 minutes then run hot water

Next, a bunch of ice cubes (this hardens the grease and helps it go thru)---maybe do this step first and then the baking soda/vinegar.

If this doesn't work, suggest that you use a 'snake' (not too expensive at a hardware store) --- snake it thru and see if you can dis-lodge whatever is making it sto.

If that fails, turn off the water - put a pot under the pipe(s) and open/separate the pipes and clean it out - make sure nothing obstructing.

Last but not least use a commercial product that unclogs the pipes - folllowing the direcrions on the bottle.

Are you using the 'key' that comes with your disposal to loosen it up under the disposal? and then hitting reset? If not do that.

Good luck. B the way, it is easy to replace the disposal - just make sure you someone to help you as it can be awkward.

If you have to hit the disposal every time you use it, sounds like the starting switch inside the disposal. Replace the disposal.

Pour a bottle of white distilled vinegar down the drain. Then follow with a half cup of cooking oil.
