The Legend of Hell House (1973)

A group of experts on paranormal activity are paid to prove that evil spirits haunt the Belasco mansion (affectionately known as "Hell House"). At one point, a character says that "Hell House" is the Mount Everest of haunted houses, and I think this film is the Mount Everest of haunted house movies. In terms of suspense and hair-raising horrors, the film kicks the ghostly butts of films like The Haunting (1963) and The Others (2001). This is possibly the scariest movie that achieves its chills without showing much. There is hardly any blood, violence, or gore, and the horrors are mostly implied, but just try to get this movie out of your head. You just can't! It is funny how this film uses every haunted house cliché and still comes across as one of the best films of the genre. Richard Matheson's screenplay is so tight that if you sneeze, you will probably miss something really important. His script is a model of economy, wasting absolutely no time, and grabbing the viewer by the throat. I would have liked a little more character development, but the actors' great work compensates, suggesting things that the script does not have time to explore. Roddy McDowal's reluctant medium is the highlight of the film, but Pamela Franklin is also superb as a young psychic. The setting is claustrophobic (just a few rooms), but the excellent ensemble cast does wonders with the limitations imposed by the sets. Director Hough creates an almost unbearable tense atmosphere, making the actual house an important character. The ending is a beauty and a real surprise.

Good question. When I was a kid my favourite horror film was called Them. Giant ants...cool! Black and White and low budget but excellent movie. Also liked Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds as a kid. That was the first horror film that kept me awake at night.
Tremors is a modern day favourite. Giant worms in the Nevada desert. Don't laugh but I also liked Killer Klowns From Outa Space (hides head in shame...)
Favourite horror in the last 12 months in the Descent.

The Exorcist followed by Salem's Lot (David Soul version, my brother showed this at my 12th birthday party and scared the cr*p out of all the kids! None of them would go home alone afterwards!)

I also love the Halloween movies.

I'm gonna go with Texas Chainsaw Massacre (The Remake.) Just cos it generally makes me scared of backtown places. (Though now i'm thinking Deliverance)

If not that, and I know that this is a bit silly, but Final Destination. The idea that if death wants to get you - anything and everything can kill you at anytime. Well now I'm freaked.
