when just a few years ago we were able to copy songs from the radio onto tape/cassette's? I mean, I used to do that all the time when I was younger and buy the music as well(same songs); why all the big problem now as opposed to years ago?

The whole thing changed when file sharing came to be - the songs you recorded off the radio had the costs associated with the song paid by the radio station. File sharing made it possible for multiple people to get a song with it being paid for only ONCE...usually by buying the album. This results in large losses to the record companies and artists, who get paid every time a song is played on the radio, or an album is sold. File sharing results in less albums being sold, so everybody in the industry loses money.

A tape of a song usually didn't have the reach of a P2P program, so it was not as damaging.

Because the quality of taping something off the radio was not that good and it was very time consuming... They didn't feel the need to chase after those people, it was legal as long as you didn't sell those recordings for profit.

Music can now be ripped into an MP3 or other higher quality files and can sound identical to the compact disc. These files can be easily shared on the internet and burned to a CD or put on an MP3 player and the files can be traded all over the world in a matter of minutes.
