To move in the fourth dimension, one moves into the future and back to the past. The fact that there is a speed limit of + 1 second per second makes it of a different nature than the other dimensions. The three spatial and one time dimension are all refered to as dimensions since they are the four dynamical parameters that occur in physical theories.

The idea of time being a dimension was reinforced when Dr. E came up with special relativity because space and time transform to different reference frames in a disturbingly similar way. Before Dr. E, the x coordinate of an event in a reference frame moving a velocity V in the x direction was:

x'=x-Vt

where x is the positiion in the stationary frame and x' is the position in the moving frame. Time, meanwhile, was absolute: t'=t. After Dr. E we have:

x'=Ax+Bt
t'=Cx+Dt

where A,B,C and D are functions of V. A curious feature of the (Lorentz) transformation is that it represents a rotation in (x,ict) coordinates, where c is speed of light and i is square root of -1. That i is the key to making time so much different that space. Otherwise, we could just turn around an be in the past!

Time is often considered the 4th dimension, but there are theories about spatial dimensions beyond the three we commonly experience. The 2nd is an extension of the 1st, and the 3rd goes off perpendicular to the 2nd...so the 4th is perpendicular to the 3rd and isn't the 2nd. Clear? In the 2nd one, we have a square. A 3-D square is a cube. A 4-D cube is a hypercube or a tesseract.

The fourth dimension is said to be time. It can be argued whether time is really a dimension or not.
Also see the link below which explains a theory that we would in fact be living in a ten dimensional space.

The fourth dimension is TIME. It moves forward only. At least that is our perception.

some times the fourth dimension is considered time. but in abstract physics, it is called spatial 4th dimension which is a dimension u can't see by your eyes.
