You may also want to check if you can make your own recovery disks, meaning some manufactors( i.e Compaq) actually have a program installed into the computer that will allow you to make what is called "Recovery CD(s)" What this will do is pretty much the same thing as a destructive restore, but will allow you to upload the cpu files on to new hardware such as new hard drive.

Though the company/manufactorer may want you to buy this set of cds as well (which is a bummer)

Your best bet is to check the website of the computer manufactorer for more detailed and accurate information.

But in answer to your question,

NO, you should not have to rebuy XP unless you want to upgrade to XP Pro or something of that nature. Mainly because you have already bought the software when you bought the computer, it woud be with lack of a better word, wrong for them to "make" you buy xp at retail to restore the OS.

Some manufacturers will also copy the files needed to install drivers, etc. to the c:\i386 directory on your hard disk.

I've also seen manufacturers store the Windows XP installation files in a hidden partition on the hard drive.

You will probably want to check the e-machines website. They should have a support faq page that will tell you what you need to do to install various drivers or to restore your system.

No. The restore CD is all you need. It has XP and everything on it to bring your EMachines back to factory shipped condition.
