that would depend on the problem. most software issues can be resolved by troubleshooting or looking around on the internet. hardawre is different. for hard drive issues, try reformatting and defragging, if that doesnt work: its time for a new one. for RAM, reseat the memory, make sure the RAM type matches your motherboards specs, and look for signs of damage (i.e. missing
DIMMS). otherwise: upgrade time. for CPU's, theres not too much you can d except take it out, put it back in, and try again. for motherboards, take the board out and try it with other components to see if it works then. for video cards, try reinstaling drivers and reseating the card. try putting another working card in the computer and seeing if its the card or just the bus slot its in. Overall, you just want to test each part in another system before you do anything to make sure its the hardware, and not the software.
Hope this helps!

I do my own repairs. I'm not that great at sotware repairs yet but learning. I can troubleshoot most hardware problems though. I can make my way around most OS's and figure out issues.

this is so subjective dude, physical repairs or software repairs. Did youy drop it, and needs replacement, did you crash a hard drive or software= operating system is acting up.

Simple, if I can fix it, I do, if not, I replace.. cause if it's something I can't fix, it's not fixable.
