So the lid doesn't shift or pop open when they are throwing dirt on it or accidently open while being lowered or if it is dropped?

They are no longer nailed down, most, but not all casket have what is called a gasket. When the lid meets the base, it is cranked shut and that helps prevent graveside elements from entering the casket. There hasn't been graverobbers in many, many years, and it has NOTHING to do with health reasons, as not all caskets seal. Wood caskets do not seal, it just depends on what type of casket the family chooses.

I don't know where you heard that, but they don't nail down coffin lids anymore. They're closed and sealed and put into the ground. No nails.

I think it is because there used to be so many grave robbers back in the old days. Maybe it used to be a deterrent. Now days, they have those cement things that go around the coffins so I don't think it matters anymore.

No wondering - just common sense. Grave robbers, water, animals, etc. can gain entrance and defile the body. It's more for health reasons AND peace of mind for the family.

Not really, its to prevent people from getting in rather than the bodt getting out. Graverobbing still occurs these days.
