Is it necessarry to jack one side up? And do you need new rocker arm nuts, or is there a way to keep the old ones from backing off?

The nuts should be self locking. Replace them if they are backing off. From my 1964 Chiltons. Rotate engine counter clock wise until the number one cylinder is at firing position and the crank shaft pulley notch is at zero on the timing pad. Adjust 1 intake and 1 exhaust, 3 intake, 5 exhaust, 4 exhaust, and 6 intake. Rotate engine CCW to number two firing position and the crank shaft pulley notch is at zero on the timing pad. Adjust 3 exhaust, 5 intake, 2 intake, 2 exhaust, 4 intake, and 6 exhaust. Loosen nut until up and down movement of the push rod is felt. Tighten nut until no up and down movement of the push rod is felt. Then tighten nut another 3/4 of a turn. replace valve covers and tighten to 40-60 inch pounds. Getting the rear of the car up in the air will make the job easier. Get new valve cover gaskets and be ready to get dirty.
