I agree to that to a point that rich waste a lot and poor people conserve a lot. But am not satisfied with ur example, the picnic spots are really not waste of money. Just think logically, the government spent money to build it and employed a few people, maybe some poor masons too, and such spots are for the general health of all, so in that sense thats not a waste.
But we usually waste a lot when we eat . I have seen people dining in restaurants, food courts, order super size expensive meals, and then throwing of the remaining. we can control this kind of waste! Similart the misuse of Electricity and power and other natureal resources!

Corrupt governments squander the natural and human resources that are available. This is the world's main reason for poverty. We are blessed in America with abundant natural resources AND a capitalistic society that allows the free flow of capital (money, resources) to the most productive use. Our form of democracy checks/balances runaway captialism where one business eventually would own everything. Our media/press checks our runaway government that would look out for its own interests only if permitted.
Other governments (ie- modern day Cuba) have the resources but rely on a communist or socialist system to divide up the use of the resources instead of trusting people and their everyday decisions. Central planning does not work.
Other examples are North Korea and even Iran (blessed with oil but can't pay the bills).

Go to the mall and leave the thinking to the grownups. There are always going to be haves and have-nots. Would you rather have a garbage strewn overgrown vacant lot across the street from you? Your dismay over class seperation shows that you probably haven't had to work for anything yet. Wait until you get out in the real world and see what it's like to have people upset because you have something they don't.

I think that the root of poverty goes a lot deeper than picnic shelters. I suggest that you check out Jeffrey Sach's book "The End of Poverty". One of the major reasons that poor countries remain poor, is that a HUGE portion of "foreign aid" dollars goes right back into the pockets of first-world nations through debt-repayment programs. The poor countries owe money to the rich countries, so a lot of the foreign aid they receive goes to paying back debts, NOT to development of sustainable infrastructure. Another major problem is the USA's continued policy of subsidizing farmers, which drives the prices of agricultural products down and prevents farmers in developing countries from selling their products for a fair price on the global market.

yes- the mooney for luxury and ornamentation could have funded charities many times over. It is estimated that the average person needs about 30,000 a year to make a nice living, and all the rest could be donated to charity. 30,000, now think of the celebs and politicians and white collar people who frivolously spend on ski chalets, expensive liquor, rhinestone and diamonds, clothes for their dogs....I quite agree.

I agree. I was also thinking about that as well. I mean there is just so much in this world that we do not need and yet we wonder why people are living in such horrible conditions.
