We the people vote these leeches in, and it does not matter who gets in power they will cause us the same hurt over and over again. It's a viscous circle, and one we can not break because some time in the 1600's a rebellion stopped the Royal family being leader of this country, and a government was formed. mind you that first government was not voted in, so was it legal?.
All politicians are cheats and liars, and all they want to do it get as much money for themselves, and sit back and watch us the tax payer work longer and harder to pay for their pay rises, holidays, houses, cars, suits, cooks, cleaners, butlers, chauffeurs....
Why are there so many Yanks answering questions about the British government. We don't have democrats here sunshine.

Elected governments are essentially given their powers by the people they govern. Ergo, they can't rob you if you don't give them the power to do so.
I live in Washington State. A guy named Tim Eyman has gotten several measures on the ballot to limit or revoke assorted taxes, and to require lawmakers to clear tax hikes with voters. Most of those initiatives have passed. However, the subsequent city, county, and state campaigns to stop him have been impressive; every Eyman measure passed by the voters has been challenged in court, most successfully, some more than once.
In large part, that is because the people who vote care more about other, more polarizing issues, when it comes time to elect their next batch of officials. Taxes still matter to them, but they are easily distracted by issues such as abortion, gay rights, and oil.
Still, the ancestors of we, the voters, created this system to be regulated by us. It's in our power to do so, if we can put our differences aside long enough to effect a change.
We need a third large political party. Or more. As it stands now, Republicans can handle money but not ethics, Democrats can handle ethics but not money. We need another group that can do both, and/or provide an incentive to get members of the other two once again remembering that they are public servants.

In general the government is the biggest employer of any given nation.
The civil service dwarfs any other company in terms of manpower and operating costs - essentially the job ques are kept short by employing people in the business of government - the civil service.
The civil service has no competition, no saleable product, and an ever increasing number of potential employees. All problems are not solved by getting lean - but by getting more staff and spending more money.
Thus the costs keep going up, and the tax bill rises to pay for it.
I would love to see a value analysis done - how much benefit does an average tax payer recieve for each pound/dollar of tax paid? I'm guessing its a fraction of a penny/cent.
How can we change it? - Beats me I'm afraid. Where's Robin Hood when you need him?

It's not the government who are robbing us it's business people with their clever accountants who when they are paying tax at all (rather than continually changing the company name) are only paying a token amount. How many people do you estimate, that earn £100,000+, actually pay the tax that should be due on that. The workers on PAYE are subsidising their lifestyle but it doesn't worry them they will eat well tonight and they certainly wont worry that the gas or the electric might just be about to go. If everyone (due to a moral revolution, or whatever) actually all declared their true taxable earnings our tax rate would probably fall to about 10 pence in the pound.

Then vote for a government that will not prove any protection of money in banks, that won't pay any unemployment, that offers no welfare money, that does not pay any unearned income credit to the poor instead of paying taxes and vote to get rid of any social security and you would fairly well have it.
In general America has lower tax rates than most nations.

It really hurts & I bet everyone working hard for paychecks feels the pain as much as you do. One way I console myself is having it in mind that my true pay is half whatever the stated salary is & hence base my budget on that.
Secondly, a lot of taxes can be overridden or manipulated if you do business.
As for the government, well you can't control its recklessness, money-wasting ventures or disregard for peoples' desired programs. The best we could do is to exercise our voting rights in the hope that our elected representatives truely represents us.

The democrats think they can handle your money better than you can. Just look at Bush's tax cuts, your taxes whent down and the federal revenue went up. Any dem. that gets a chance trys to raise taxes then give it to people that don't try to improve themselves.

Where have you been for the past 40 years, especially the last 10 years? Get use to it, it will get worst, you pay, and do not get representation, no matter who gets into office.

I hate the government as much as anyone, but you overlook your own key word, "legalized". It's not robbery until it's illegal. But I think taxes suck anyway. Import tariffs would even be preferable.
