Was this a species found in the wild or near habitation. Were there multiple creatures or a singular. Could check the guide books for small mammals for pictures.
National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mammals (John O. Whitaker, Softcover) could be a source of information. It comes with diagrams.

Ask everyone on here..... just provide a more detailed description and I am sure one of us could help you..... I have a copy of Audubon field guide to North american mammals so if you give a description and your location I will be able to give you some ideas, at least if you live on this continent.

If you can't find the answer on here, you might be able to call your county extension agent and describe it to them. If it is a vole or a type of mole, they would be familiar with it as they tend to be knowledgeable about garden problems (which a mole or vole could cause )

Sounds to me like either a nutria or a ground mole. I found a link to an article on nutrias if that helps. =)
As to who to ask about it, maybe someone at the zoo can help or you can call the wildlife people in your area.

It's called a vole. I was mystified the first time I saw one too!
