The Dark Ages and Middle Ages were two culturally distinct eras in history, so they can't be combined or exchanged for one another.

The Dark Ages followed the collapse of the Roman Empire and was a period when Europe had no growth in the Arts, government or science due to regional conflicts for rulership over the people.

The Middle Ages followed once a semblance or order began to take hold; they immediately preceded the Enlightenment, or the Rennaissance, when science and the arts began to flourish once more in the 1500's

The Dark Ages were so-called because of the influence and spread of Christianity and all the repression of knowledge and people that happened. Though people call the Middle Ages the Dark Age, it is not correct.

No serious historian uses the term "dark ages." The term was invented in the 18th century as a slur against the Catholic Church. In reality, during those centuries the Catholic Church was the only institution in Western Europe running schools and preserving knowledge.
