I don't know if there is a name for it or not. But I think it happens before the Delta stage of sleep. That's the stage where you dream. However before that there is a period of sleep that as you say you're half-way conscience and after that you drift into the delta stage. I know a little about this since I've been treated for sleep apnea. Before the treatment I would hardly ever get to the Delta stage, so I might wake up throughout the night and sometimes get that terrible feeling where you know you are asleep but can't seem to wake yourself up.
