I'm trying to start a comics company. Needless to say, it's a little expensive. I looked through lots of magazines and they seem to make a lot of money from advertising. How do they go about getting advertisers? It would really help.

Unfortunately your in for a tough ride. Magazine advertising rates depend on the size of their circulation/ readership. Advertisers pay to place their ads in publications that will reach their target market. Often this is referred to as a cost per 1000 reached. You then package all of this information up plus your advertising rates into a media pack which you send to potential advertisers, ad agencies and media buyers. Or you can call companies who you think would like to reach the readers of your mag and sell them the space direct.

As you may gather unless you have a name for creating publications that reach specific markets you are going to find it hard to get first time advertisers or find a financial backer.
If your still serious and feeling brave you could develop a business plan and applying to get on Dragons Den: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dragonsden/
Having said all of the above you can always start small and grow your comics idea.
Remember VIZ: http://www.geordie.co.uk/articles/viz_comic.htm

Just realised that you could have meant a mag for comics, as in comedians. Oh well same principles apply!

Best of luck

Hi, perhaps you can try Google adwords to market your service/product.

Google adwords is a text-based system for advertising on its site and its partner sites. The service allows you to create your own ads, choose keywords to help match your ads to your audience, and control the cost of your advertising—you pay only when people click on your ad (a cost per click plan). Anyone wishing to promote a product on Google can enroll in this program.

you can get a 5 detail pages information about Google adwords at :

Advertising in magazines is definitely going to be a costly venture, especially with the more popular ones. Why don't you make your own website for your company?

you will need to collect and prepare sales numbers and demographics profile to help you sell adspace in your publication. What is the age of your readership; how many issues do you sell, how is the publication distributed.

Think about which companies might find your comic an appropriate advertising vehicle (that depends on your demographics and sales) and contact them.
