Actually the root word is "lead" here not leader.
You can't say that what is "leader" according to part of speech until you use it in sentence.
Notice you have given a word what is just a word, does not belongs to part of speech until you don't use in a sentence.

Leader can be a noun or adjective also, depend on the use.If you use leader before a noun then it's also an adjective.
leadership is also an adjective where we add ship to make it adjective but remember it all depends on the use.

Add -ship then use it before another noun (leader and leadership are both nouns).

EXAMPLES:
1. Maria will deliver the leadership certificates.
2. Who will attend the leadership seminar?
3. The boys will join the leadership forum.
4. Everyday, we hear leadership problems in the team.
5. Shall we acquire a new leadership logo?

Hope I helped.
