Wood averages a little lighter than water.
If you look at a bunch of potted pine trees in the nursery, average height 1 foot, and a bunch of mature redwoods, which have bark thicker than that, you start to realize that 'average tree' isn't very meaningful in the sense you want. You need to narrow it down some.

It depends on a lot of factors when you say "average". To narrow your group, I'd probably ask what kind of tree, and then you may be able to get an answer, though it's still not certain.
