today I lifted something heavy and my back is strained. It is not rigid, still when I am in vertical position it hurts and as a result I cannot walk. Could it be something serious ? or will it dissapear the next couple of days? How should I cope with it?

I am 30 years old, fit and never had a back problem.

Sounds like you pulled a muscle. The best advise a non-medical person such as myself can give is go get an xray and make sure it is nothing serious. The physician can suggest ice packs, muscle relaxants, pain meds, or just time.

First thing to remember is the correct way to lift things -- get someone else to do it! Seriously, there is a correct way to lift things and I sometimes forget too. But for now, don't lift anything heavy at all for a while.

Take three ibuprofen three times a day for three days. Be sure to take it after you have eaten. The ibuprofen will help relieve pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness . It works by stopping the body's production of a substance that causes pain, fever, and inflammation. Be sure to read all the warnings on the bottle before you use it. If it's not better after 3 days call your doctor

Causes
Your lower back bears most of the weight and stress of your body. Back pain most often occurs from strained back muscles and ligaments, from improper or heavy lifting, or after a sudden awkward movement. Sometimes a muscle spasm can cause back pain. Often, there's an accumulation of stress with one particular event unleashing the pain. In many cases, there may not be an obvious cause.

When to seek medical advice

Most back pain gradually improves with home treatment and self-care. Although it may take several weeks before it completely disappears, you should notice some improvement within the first 72 hours of self-care. If not, see your doctor.

In rare cases, back pain can signal a serious medical problem. See a doctor immediately if your back pain:

Is constant or intense, especially when lying down or at night
Spreads down one or both legs
Causes weakness, numbness or tingling in one or both legs
Causes new bowel or bladder problems
Is associated with abdominal pain or pulsation (throbbing), or fever
Follows a fall, blow to your back or other injury
Is accompanied by unexplained weight loss

You should see a doctor, I started having back pain when I was about 30 and the older I got, the worse it got. I'm 40 now and it have turned to very severe lower back pain. I have to take shots in my spine about every 3 weeks, but it don't help. They want to operate and try to replace the corroded parts of my spine, but the catch is when the operation is over, I have a 50/50 chance of ever walking again. So the operation is out. You go and get checked out by a doctor as soon as possible.

There is no medical cure for lower the back pain that you must be experiancing. The only relief you can get is by going to a phisio-therapist.
However "Iyangar Yoga" has some excellant yoga postures for it. John McEnroe and Sachin Tendulkar got relief from it. So find an Iyangar Yoga teacher in your city or nearby & Be Happy.

Oh man, I had lower back surgery at 28, I feel your pain. I lifted a 4 wheeler and mine popped, I went down hill from there. First just relax for at least 2 days. Make a doctors apt. and have a exam done. Yes it can be serious.

This is the problem associated with improper lifting position. If you get it treated before there is too much inflamation involved, there is usually very rapid response. See your chiropractor asap.. if there is somethng more serious, he is well equipped diagnose the condition and if necessary, refer you for the necessary care should that problem be more severe. The longer you wait, the longer you will have to allow the inflamation to subside. Even with treatment.
