Funny, I asked this question last week and got no satisfactory answer. I maintain that, while there really is no difference, the "out" is unnecessary. The only situations in which I could see it being necessry is when you are literally helping someone out of something, i.e. helping them out of a car, or out of a predicament. If you are simply rendering aid, "help" is all you need.
