To bob kerr, there is no sense of normality in Iraq now.Bombs and destruction everywhere. No power no water.During Saddam there was a sereal sense of normality and even prosperity before we apply the sanctions. That does not deny the fact that he was a dectator. But the question is Dectator with normal life ( except for political opponents ) or Democracy with rotten life

Iraqis are not better off than they were before we invaded. Saddam was a dictator and some - in fact many - suffered under his regime. But he was a known quantity who kept al Qaida out of Iraq. More people had on a regular basis before we invaded: jobs, incomes, food, clothing, shelter, running water, electricity. Gasoline is no longer a reliably available commodity but since streets are not safe, it may not matter. Hospitals were bombed and few repaired so medical care is a problem. Hundreds of thousands have fled the country. Numbers are not known but recently 40,000 school records were known to have been requested by wealthy parents leaving Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been displaced -- Sunnis and Shiites have left the northern Kurd area, Sunnis fled the south and Shiites went south. Militias and criminal gangs roam freely. More than 100 Iraqis are murdered every day. But millions voted and got ink on their fingers.

Yes they are better off now in that they are experiencing a sense of normality that was denied to them under Saddam. It is far from perfect and the continual loss of innocent lives is tragic but there is no going back to life as it was they can only move forward. There will be a backlash against the insurgents as political and religious supporters realise there is power to be had by moving forward and isolating them.

It depends on one's definition of "better off." It's nice that Saddam is gone, but if the violence keeps getting worse and they just end up with another dictator, a lot of people will have died for nothing. I hope we get some more intelligent people in power to make the war end soon.

for USA it is better off now because it is controlling the country (the oil in a different word), but for the Iraqi people of course not, just ask yourself what is the democracy useful for a dead body !everybody in Iraq now is a living target .

Whether you agree or not, we have given the Iraqis the best opportunity they will ever have to control their own destiny without an oppressive regime governing their lifes with threat of torture, death or worse. If they are willing to fight for their freedom, we will be successful and the Iraqis will be infinitely better off. If the people of any country are not willing to fight for their rights and freedoms, we will not be successful in any attempts we make to help them. That is the simple lesson we hopefully learned in Viet Nam.
