Kids are manipulative sometimes...and always testing the boundaries. Knowing what the expectation is, and that they can trust you to uphold it, is a big part of what builds trust with kids, making them feel safe and secure. Most times they whine just to see if you mean what you say. If you cave, they don't have to do their jobs and it hardly costs them a thing in terms of energy. It happens all the time. Over time, if you have consistently high expectations, and reasonable, and if they feel invested in the family...this isn't such a big problem. But from time to time, even the most reliable little helper will whine.

For dishes, one way to help the process along is to use really really hot water to rinse with. They dry faster than warm or cold water rinse, and air dry on a drainboard a lot faster even than a dishwasher where the dishes are cooped up in a humid environment.

Personally I never bother, I wash up, I know everything is clean then, I also find it therapeutic and sort out the worlds problems while I do this! But as I wash up, I run the article under a HOT tap and drain, then cover the lot with a clean wiping up cloth to dry, then the kids put the things away. I find this more hygienic to do this then use a wiping up cloth. But that is just my theory!

Because children want to play and do exciting things, dishes can dry on their own on the drainer and then be put away

Because if they are left there the water evaporates and the dishes become dry without the expenditure of precious energy :)

Find something else for them to do. No need to dry dishes, anyway. Just rinse with hot water, and they'll air dry.

for the same reason they moan when you ask them to pick up their toys... they feel like its interfering with their abundant freedom as children, but without those kinds of boundaries, they would become monsters, I just know it.!!
